Question: I am interested in joining the nursing program at Truman State University. What do I need to do?

Answer: First you must apply to be accepted to Truman State University. Then you can apply to the Nursing program by sending in an application which is located on the Nursing website (nursing@truman.edu). A short essay is requested. You may submit your application to the Department of Nursing at the same time you submit your application to the university. Then it will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee who will then notify all applicants of the committee's decisions.

Question: I am interested in the Nursing Program. Who can I speak to about becoming a Nursing major?

Answer: You can contact the Nursing Department office at 660-785-4557 or send an e-mail to nursing@truman.edu to set up an appointment with a faculty member.

Question: How long does it take to complete the nursing program?

Answer: It takes 8 semesters to complete the nursing program since each of the classes are usually full. The ability to complete the major in less than 8 semesters is rare, and requires advisement and special permission if seats are available.

Question: What is the deadline to submit an application?

Answer: The application deadline is January 31 each year for classes that begin the following fall semester. Applications received after the deadline will be considered upon space availability.

Question: Is there a way to increase my chances of getting into the nursing program?

Answer: Your acceptance into the Nursing Program will be based on your ACT score and High School/College Academic Cumulative GPA. The Admissions Committee requires a minimum Cumulative GPA score of 2.75 to enter the program.

Question: How many applicants do you have each year?

Answer: We receive approximately 100 applications for the Nursing Program each year.

Question: How many students are accepted into the nursing program each year?

Answer: Due to limitations the Department of Nursing can only accept 50 students into the Nursing Program each year.

Question: I've submitted my application to the Nursing Program. When will I know if I'm accepted?

Answer: The Admissions Committee meets in early spring each year. All applicants will be notified by mail regarding the status of their application.

Question: I am currently a student at Truman and would like to change my major to nursing. What do I need to do?

Answer: The first step is to submit an application to the Department of Nursing. You can go online to the nursing website at nursing@truman.edu to locate and submit the application. A short essay is requested. You can also print and mail the application to: Truman State University, Nursing Department, Barnett Hall Room 2401, 100 East Normal, Kirksville, MO  63501. It is recommended that you submit your application in the fall to be considered for the following fall semester. It is recommended that you make an appointment with a Nursing faculty member to review your current schedule.

Question: What high school classes do I need to take as pre-requisites for nursing classes?

Answer: You should take basic Chemistry and Biology with labs, Math, Psychology, and higher level Sciences would be beneficial.

Question: Who will be my advisor?

Answer: When you are accepted into the Nursing Program you will be assigned an advisor and that faculty member will be able to assist you in planning your classes so you can complete the requirements for the BSN degree.

Question: If I graduate from a nursing program that is not in my home state, can I still take the licensure exam in my home state?

Answer: Yes. After graduation, you apply to the state you want to be licensed in to take the national exam.
